Surely you remember the original State of Emergency. How could one not?

In one of the smoothest marketing coups of this generation, Rockstar managed to parley Grand Theft Auto III's massive success into a rabid interest in its next published game, State of Emergency. They both shared realistic urban environments and allowed for brutal and wanton killing, but the similarities ended there. Once players got past the marketing, they discovered State of Emergency to be a fair but rather shallow arcade game. Now, no less than four years later, State of Emergency is returning via not only a new publisher, but a new development team. Probably deserves a fair shake then, eh?

Takes place a decade after the original, with Mack, Bull, Freak, Spanky and Libra still fighting the good fight against the sinister Corporation. The atmosphere feels much more militant than in the previous game; the world of SoE2 is less of a GTA-style parody and more of a dark future dystopia. As the game begins, Mack and Bull are on death row and Libra's just been captured. You'll have to try the game to see how they resolve this particular jam, but suffice it to say that the game starts out with a bang. Takin' It to the Streets Lots of bangs, really. One thing SoE never lacked was body count, and that's also true in SoE2. The game gives you a solid selection of projectile weapons and lets you go to town, even painting it red, as they say.

The prison guards and corporation enforcers don't take much to go down, but they make up for their lack of vitality in sheer numbers. Once you get in the zone it can be fun to mow down wave after wave of the bastards. All of the action is crammed into structured missions. You always have a clear goal and a dot on the map showing where to go. The first of twelve missions has you breaking Mack and Bull out of the slammer, which involves more shooting and less rappelling out of windows via bed sheets.

Sorry, stealth fans! Releasing the other prisoners incites a riot, bringing back memories of the first SoE. Once you reach the courtyard you get to commandeer a chopper, at which point the first vehicular sequence begins as you fly around the prison island to take out power stations. The next mission puts you in control of ghetto warrior Spanky, defending his urban abode from corporate thugs with a convenient Gatling gun emplacement. That done, it's time to hit the streets to hook up with an allied crime figure and get to the bottom of the weird Corporation-affiliated drug dealers that've been popping up. You can recruit extra gang member NPCs as you find them, and give them group commands like fall back or attack to help put the odds in your favor. The third mission finally sees Mack and Bull reaching the mainland and hooking up with Spanky at the docks.

Of course, the Corporation is around to rain on their parade, and Mack and Bull end up stealing a tank and rampaging around destroying Corporation drug shipments. And so it goes.

SoE2 definitely has variety going for it, from interrogation minigames to sniper segments to vehicular sequences, most of which are pretty well-implemented.
