More than 15 million people visit more than 300 Civil War battlefields and historic sites each year, and many are near campgrounds, according to the nonprofit Civil War Trust. Four major battlefields with nearby campgrounds are within about a two-hour drive for those who prefer road trips to historical sites. From Antietam National Battlefield in Maryland, the National Park Service reports that the distance is about 17 miles to Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia, 60 miles to Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania and 65 miles to Manassas National Battlefield in Virginia. The longest distance between just two of the four National Park Service sites is the approximately 90 miles between Gettysburg and Manassas.

Camp Near AntietamThe Antietam National Battlefield’s Rohrbach campground is open only to scouting and other youth groups. Near the battlefield, KOA operates the Hagerstown/Antietam Battlefield Campground, which has tent sites, RV hookups and cabins. Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, which has parklands near Antietam, Harper’s Ferry and other former battlefields, allows one-night camping reservations at several sites along the 184-mile canal that runs through Washington, D.C., Maryland and West Virginia. Visiting Other BattlefieldsThe first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. About 4 miles away in Charleston, you can set up camp at Oak Plantation Campground or a KOA-run campground. Tour the battlefields at Historic Blakely State Park in Alabama while camping at the state park. Missouri’s Battle of Athens State Historic Park has campsites with and without electrical hookups near a preserved battlefield that includes a house with holes left by cannon balls.

At Fort McAllister State Park in Georgia, Civil War talks by park historians are regularly scheduled at this battlefield site with tent grounds and cottages.
